our story

The story of the hams begins in the mid-1960's when George Canale originally founded the business in Bartlett, TN. However, in 1970, owners of the original business, brothers Justin and Conn Canale, found a new home for the family business, and moved it here to Eads, TN. And so 47 years ago, the doors first opened at this very same location, in the very same modest cement block building under the name Canale's Grocery.

It wasn't long before the word got out that Canale's was the destination for ham sandwiches in East Shelby County, and it indeed was Home of the Hams!

Tragically, in September of 2015, the original owner, Conn Canale, began to suffer from health issues and he decided to close the store. Most everyone thought that the world famous Hams from Canale's Grocery were gone forever, but long-time friends and patrons of the store, Mark Welch and John Ennis, who lived nearby and had to pass by Canale's every day without being able to go in and get their morning biscuits, their ham sandwiches at lunch, or order their smoked hams around the holidays, decided that Canale's needed to re-open. And so they purchased the store and the original recipe from Conn Canale, and were able to retain him as a consultant to begin the process of reviving the old store and replicating the delicious smoked hams, breakfast biscuits, and ham sandwiches that he made for so many years.

In November 2016, Canale's was re-opened as Home of the Hams. While it's no longer called Canale's Grocery, since Canale's was the name of the family business, it has the same location, the same homegrown flavor, and visitors can still enjoy the feel of nostalgia. Not only is the non-ethanol gas available again, most importantly, the breakfast biscuits, ham sandwiches, and the smoked hams are back, and the recipe has not changed!
